History of the Tour de Bog
by Duke Richard de Stacpoole
A Family Fun cycle , now known as the “Tour de Bog” was literally founded by three-families Ruari Quinn, Barry & Jackie Smyth and the Simpsons in the early 90’s. As the years went by many more friends and visitors took part in this family loop cycle ride from Roundstone to Ballyconneely, to the bog Road and back into Roundstone (32K) .
The Green Shirt: Stephen Roache wore when he won the Tour de France in 1987. This shirt was given to the Tour de Bog organisers by a friend of Roundstone to enhance the spirit of the family cycle. This shirt is an honour given to a different individual to lead off the cycle each year.

The Tour de bog, eventually, at each annual event, played a role of fundraising for the Community / Village for example, funds for the local youth, Club Defibrillators and much more over the years.
During the Day, music can be heard all over the village, awarding of certain medals, and a speech banter when all the participants are together and much more for all to really enjoy themselves on the day.
In the past few years, the annual Tour de Bog, with the increase of participants, has alerted us, that we now must make some real security precautions. Water stops, more marshals along the route, signage, Or and a backup car with a trailer, for breakdowns etc, a lead car with flashing lights, an Order of Malta Ambulance (since2009) on standby with walkie talkers.
In the light of the above of this huge change, planning has now become our top priority which incurs an increase of expenses, and higher insurance costs.
